Robber, Mugger, Footpad…
In underworld slang they are called “Rampsman” or “Mug-Hunters.” The most common type of Rogue and the kind that comes to mind when most people think of thieves and ruffians. They ply their trade from dark alleys and in the back streets away from the glare of the gas lights. Stealth, surprise and violence is their stock in trade, though it does not pay to be too violent. Robbery may get you a stint in Newgate but murder gets you a dose of “Hemp Fever.”

Surprise Rolls
Muggers stalk their prey in the streets of towns and cities. Their Situational Awareness is attuned to the sights, sounds and smells of the streets, alleys and courtyards of the environment they hunt. For these Rogues, Surprise is modified as follows:
Being Surprised
-2 to Surprise Roll when outside in an urban environment
-1 to Surprise Roll when Indoors
0 modification to Surprise Roll in the countryside or rural/wilderness environment
Surprising Others
+2 to Surprise Roll when outside in an urban environment
+1 to Surprise Roll when Indoors
0 modification to Surprise Roll in the countryside or rural/wilderness environment
Initiative Rolls
The experiences of fights in barrooms and back alleys, gives Robbers an Initiative bonus of -1 to rolls.
Back Stab
The signature attack of a Robber/Footpad/Mugger Rouge. It is not a skill that all Rogue’s posses. To successfully employ it the Rogue must achieve Surprise on the victim. This is usually obtained by Hiding in Shadows until the victim is distracted or using Stealth to approach from behind.
Back Stabbing need not employ a knife or blade. Most Robbers prefer a sap or cosh, to render a victim unconscious and avoid a date with the Hangman for murder. However, even when employing such a weapon, there is a risk of accidentally killing the victim.
The amount of Damage done in a Back Stab is based on the weapon, the Rouge’s Strength and his or her level.
Assuming the Rogue is unnoticed, the Attack from Behind is at +4 to Hit.
Robber Level | Back Stabbing Damage |
1-4 | Double Damage |
5-8 | Triple Damage |
9-12 | Quadruple Damage |
13-16 | Quintuple Damage |
